Young Firefighters Course - this is a two year course leading to a BTEC Fire and Rescue Service in the Community qualification. Students will spend half a day per week at Wakefield Fire Station where fire fighters deliver a structured programme of both theoretical and practical training. For this qualification a portfolio is collated with internal and external assessments and moderation.
The course teachers first aid, fire safety and all practical aspects of firefighting such as ladder climbing, hose running, rescues, breathing apparatus etc. Students develop their own personal skills as well as learning to work as a team and solve problems. They work on simulation exercises at places such as Ossett Smoke House or Pugneys Water park to assess their skills.
Construction Course (Chevin Housing) - this is a two year constructions course leading to a BTEC Level 2 First Award in Construction and the Built Environment. Student will spend half a day per week at the Chevin vocational training centre where qualified tutors will deliver a structured programme of both theoretical and practical training. For this qualification coursework is 75% of the final mark and 25% a written paper.
Students study two core units based on construction technology and construction and design as well as a mandatory unit on applications of construction. This qualification provides a specialist work related programme of study aimed at learners who have and interest in construction. This BTEC First Award will provide a practical understanding of the fundamental aspects of the industry as well as an appreciation of the knowledge, skills and competency needed when considering entering employment in this sector.
